VUSU HISTORY

VUSU History

The Victoria University Student Union (VUSU) has a long history of representing and advocating for students across Victoria University.

Before VUSU was established, students were represented by six separate organisations:

  • Sunbury Student Union (SSU)

  • Western Institute Student Union (WISU)

  • Victoria University Union (VUU)

  • Student Representative Council (SRC)

  • International Student Association (ISA)

  • Victoria University Postgraduate Association (VUPA)

These organisations played an important role in delivering student services, organising activities, supporting student groups, and advocating for student rights across Victoria University's campuses.

The timeline below highlights the key milestones that shaped the formation and evolution of VUSU into the student-led organisation it is today.

1995

The Formation of VUSU

Victoria University determined that it would be more effective for the Vice-Chancellor and Director of Student Affairs to work with a single representative student body. With the threat of Voluntary Student Unionism (VSU), the various student councils, associations and unions agreed that a unified organisation would provide a stronger voice for students and greater influence in representing their interests.

1995

Negotiations & Amalgamation

The six student organisations entered negotiations to amalgamate. Through collaboration and shared commitment to student representation, the process to establish a single student union commenced, laying the foundations for a united student voice across Victoria University.

1995

VUSU is Founded

The organisation now known as the Victoria University Student Union (VUSU) was officially founded. The Victoria University Postgraduate Association (VUPA) joined the process with a degree of autonomy, having historically received independent funding and recognition for its research contribution within the university.

1996

Amalgamation Complete

By the end of 1996, the amalgamation process had been successfully completed, bringing together six previously independent student organisations into one representative body dedicated to supporting, advocating for and empowering Victoria University students.
